The sellers at Panjiayuan Antique Markets.

The Instagram Beijing crew enjoyed its last outing for the year at Panjiayuan Antique markets. It was a great day out taking snaps on our cameras and phones, and what really struck me about the day was how good-spirited the sellers were with a group of foreigners waving cameras at them, often stopping to chat and show us their wares (probably in the hope that we’d buy some too).

One of the greatest culture shocks I’ve experienced since moving here to Beijing, and still continue to struggle with to some degree, is the absence of cheer on people’s faces. It’s certainly something I’ve taken for granted in Australia.

But the elderly of Beijing defy that. There is a sense of vitality about them which is infectious, and there’s nothing more I love than just watching them hanging out with each other when I’m out taking pictures.
